Cinema Esperanto is a film series exploring multilingualism, cultural diversity, and different cinematic perspectives through screenings presented at Control Club with the support of cultural institutes. PATAGONIA is the fifth film presented as part of the Cinema Esperanto series and marks the remarkable feature-film debut of Italian director Simone Bozzelli. Around them, in a rave camp caught in the almost endless rhythm of techno music, we discover a community seemingly living at the edge of the world. Freedom appears absolute, yet the line between liberation and captivity becomes increasingly fragile. With a furious, raw and visceral energy, Patagonia is at once a story about dependency, desire and the need to belong, and a film about the painful process of coming of age. Awards & Recognition Patagonia marks the feature-film debut of young director Simone Bozzelli, who had previously gained recognition for his short films and for a powerful visual language situated at the intersection of cinema, music and contemporary culture. In 2021, Bozzelli directed the music video for Måneskin's “I Wanna Be Your Slave,” which went on to win Best Alternative at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, becoming the first music video by an Italian band to receive the award in this category. In 2023, Patagonia was presented in competition at the Locarno International Film Festival, establishing Bozzelli as one of the emerging voices of contemporary Italian cinema. In Romania, the film was presented in 2024 as part of Visuali Italiane, a festival organized by the Italian Cultural Institute in Bucharest, where the screening was followed by a meeting with director Simone Bozzelli. About Cinema Esperanto Each screening is an invitation to briefly inhabit other realities, to step into different ways of feeling, thinking, and making sense of the world. Developed in collaboration with cultural institutes, Cinema Esperanto unfolds as a shared experience situated somewhere between screening, gathering, and encounter.
